A Heritage Mapping Activity is a collaborative learning activity in which students explore, document, and share examples of tangible and intangible cultural heritage through a digital map. Students should work in mixed groups and select heritage elements connected to their local environment or cultural backgrounds. Each element can then be added to a shared digital map with its location, an image, and a short description explaining what it is, how it is or was used, why it is important, and what it means to them.
The activity can include different forms of heritage such as traditional recipes, historical and cultural places, songs and dances, festivities, natural heritage, and arts. Once the map is completed, students should explore and comment on each other’s contributions, compare cultural traditions, identify similarities and differences, and reflect on questions such as “What did you learn about other cultures?” and “What do we share in common?” In this way, heritage mapping can support intercultural dialogue, inclusion, digital literacy, peer learning, and a sense of belonging, particularly when local and migrant students work together.
In the MIDAS project, we implemented this activity through Padlet by creating “Our Shared Cultural Heritage Map”, where partner schools contributed heritage examples from their own cultures to build a shared digital heritage collection.
